LPG

WHAT’S LPG FUEL?

LPG is the international acronym for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is a crude refining product and a Natural Gas coming from the oilfields. The LPG used to run motor vehicles is a mixture of propane gas and butane gas whose chemical and physical properties enable excellent vehicle performance in terms of power, engine agility and operation.

It burns without leaving the carbon residue in the engine that is responsible for premature wear; it increases the life of the spark plugs, valves and pistons and preserves the properties of the engine oil for much longer.

Its combustion releases lesser amounts of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and unburnt hydrocarbons than petrol and diesel, and there is no production of aromatic hydrocarbons, sulphur dioxide and particulate.

Which cars can be converted to LPG?

All cars that run on petrol with a an injection system or carburetor system can be converted to run on gas

What are the benefits of LPG Conversion?

Firstly, there is the benefit in financial terms given the lower running costs of vehicles that run on LPG compared to cars running on petrol.
LPG costs about half compared to petrol so it is possible to redeem the cost of the system quickly and then start saving money, even if the distances covered are not very high.
Secondly, there are the benefits for the environment.
LPG does not contain benzene or lead: the most harmful substances in other fuels, and particulate is not produced as a result of its combustion, one of the major causes of pollution in towns and cities.
Thanks to its environmentally friendly features, vehicles that run on LPG can be used even when motor vehicle transport is restricted because of high levels of atmospheric pollution, if contemplated by local regulations.

Are LPG systems safe?

Absolutely. Systems installation meet ARAI/ICAT regulation, which guarantees very high safety standards, based on extremely stringent international specifications and tests (crash tests, vehicle fire, etc.). In addition to having all their parts tested and approved according to this standard, LPG conversion kits are fitted with various safety devices:

a tank multivalve that automatically blocks refueling at 80% to allow expansion of the gas should the temperature rise,
Lock-off valves that shut off gas flow at the tank outlet and at the pressure reducer inlet in the engine housing and a tank approved to extremely stringent standards.
Modern LPG systems can therefore be considered absolutely safe and BRC LPG systems are today used as original equipment or recommended for installation also by various automobile manufacturers.

What maintenance does an LPG system need?

To guarantee correct long-term working, the system is checked periodically (e.g. filter replacement) according to a programmed maintenance schedule.

Why LPG-as an alternative fuel?

LPG impacts greenhouse emissions less than any other fossil fuel.
LPG is a clean burning, high octane and an environment friendly fuel.
In one of the studies, findings state that LPG vehicles emit significantly less pollution than their diesel and petrol fuel counterparts.

Can I still drive on petrol if I install an LPG system?

After installation of the LPG system, the vehicle becomes Bi-fuel, in other words, it can run either on gas or petrol. In this way the original autonomy of the vehicle actually increases, depending on the size of the gas tank installed.

What Maintenance of cars that run on gas

Vehicles converted to gas require the same type of maintenance as those running on petrol.
It is important to comply with the schedule of routine maintenance for the ignition.
Special maintenance is not necessary, but , the system has to be checked periodically according to a programmed maintenance schedule.

What difference is there in performance compared to petrol operation?

Modern LPG systems guarantee excellent engine performance and there is practically no change in how the vehicle drives.
The latest generation of BRC LPG injection systems give rise to a difference of about 2% in terms of the vehicles power when compared to petrol,

After a gas system has been installed, can I still run my car on petrol?

If a LPG system is installed, you can still run the vehicle on petrol.
The driver can decide which type of fuel to use by simple pressing the changeover switch located on the vehicle’s dashboard.
The simplicity of using a gas system is also guaranteed by the fact that, with modern systems, the vehicle always starts on petrol and automatically switches over to gas after about 30 seconds, that is after optimum operation parameters have been reached.
The vehicle’s fuel distance is practically double when a gas system has been installed as it can count on its dual fuel supply.

CNG

What is CNG?

CNG stands for compressed natural gas. It is gaseous fuel and is a mixture of hydrocarbons mainly Methane. For use in Automobiles as fuel, it is compressed to a pressure of 200-250 Kg/cm2 to enhance the vehicle on-board storage capacity.

Is CNG safe?

Yes, it is safe. The properties of CNG make it a safe fuel. It is lighter than air, so in case of a leak it just rises up and disperses into the atmosphere. Besides, a high auto-ignition temperature of 540 degrees centigrade as against petrol’s 360 degrees centigrade makes it a safe fuel. Also, in case of a leak, if CNG’s concentration in the air is less than 5% and more than 15%, the gas will not burn even in the presence of a spark.

What is the pressure of CNG in a cylinder? Is refueling of a cylinder safe, given the pressure?

CNG cylinders are designed and built in such a way so as to withstand high pressure.

The maximum pressure in a CNG cylinder is up to 200 bar. CNG cylinders are safe as they are manufactured as per specific requirements and tested before use, in accordance with international specifications and standards and they are duly approved by Chief Controller of Explosives. Moreover, these have been provided with a ‘safety burst disc’ such that in case of inadvertent high-pressure/high temperature at the time of filling or at any other time, this disc is ruptured and pressure released.

What is involved in converting a vehicle to a CNG-friendly one?

All spark-ignited engines can be converted to CNG, but a specially designed conversion kit is required for the purpose. The kit consists of a cylinder to be fixed in the boot of the car and other equipment to allow gas flow into the engine.

Can a car, fitted with CNG conversion kit, run on Petrol after its CNG gets over?

Yes, after conversion to CNG the vehicle can run on petrol whenever desired simply by flicking a switch on the dashboard.

What are the dimensions and weight of a CNG cylinder?

CNG cylinders are manufactured from a special steel alloy and are seamless in construction. Their compact size allows them to easily fit even in a small car. An empty CNG cylinder with a 60 liter water-capacity weighs 68 kg, with a length of 885 mm and a diameter of 316mm.

Does CNG kit require servicing?

CNG kit is safe and simple. It gives years of trouble free operation. It doesn’t require frequent servicing. Just as for all other fuels, it is advised to have routine services. An authorized dealer should be consulted for service. As per Gas Cylinder Rules, 1981, the cylinder should undergo hydro-stretch testing every 5 years to check pressure tolerance.

Does CNG have any harmful effect on the engine?

Owing to CNG’s distinct features, it does not contaminate or dilute crankcase oil, giving a new lease of life to the engine. The absence of any lead content in CNG helps avoid lead fouling of plugs, thereby enhancing plug life. One of the important benefits of CNG is that upon entering the engine in the form of a gas (and not as a spray or mist like other fuels), it doesn’t disturb the presence of lubricating oil in the engine, and reduces chances of wear and tear.

Why are exhaust fumes so small in CNG-run vehicles?

CNG is an environment friendly fuel. The natural gas is mainly composed of methane and its exhaust emissions consist of water vapors and a small fraction of carbon monoxide. The absence of carbon and other particulates result in negligible amount of harmful elements in exhaust fumes.
