ALTERNATIVE FUELS

As concerns over global warming continue to increase, Strict environmental norms and growing demand for fuel have quickened the quest for alternate fuels, the automotive industry is facing tremendous pressure to reduce vehicle emissions such as nitrous oxide (NOx), carbon dioxide (CO2) and particulate matter (PM) because of the harmful effects of these gases on the environment. At the same time, the prices of conventional fuels such as gasoline and diesel are increasing. Collectively, these two factors drive the development of alternative and more environmentally-friendly fuels such as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and compressed natural gas (CNG). Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) are receiving a great deal of attention and is being globally applied in vehicles.

Chemical and physical properties:

CNG = Compressed Natural Gas.
Composition depends from the CNG origin.
CNG gas mixture: methane (CH4) nitrogen (N2) carbon dioxide (CO2)
Volumic mass @ n.c.: 0,7 kg/m3 (< air)
CNG in the car tank: Ambient Temperature 200 bar pressure gaseous phase
Octane number (RON): 140
Self-ignition temperature: > of petrol
In flammability lower threshold: 5,3% by volume
In flammability upper threshold: 15% by volume

LPG Details

LPG Characteristic

Chemical and physical properties

LPG = Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
LPG is mainly Propane (C3H8), Butane (C4H10) or a mix of Propane / Butane.
LPG's boiling point ranges from -42 °C to 0 °C depending on its mixture percentage of Butane & Propane.
LPG is a liquid under pressure but a gas at ambient conditions.
Vapour LPG is twice as heavy as Air.
Liquid LPG is half as heavy as water.
LPG is colorless and odorless.
LPG has a narrow flammability range between 1.8 to 9.5% in air.
Flash point of LPG is -76˚F.
LPG is non-toxic.
The approximate minimum ignition temperature of LPG is in the range 410 ˚ C to 580 ˚ C.
It is lightly anesthetic and can cause suffocation, if present in sufficiently high concentrations.
Liquid LPG can cause severe cold burns to the skin owing to rapid vaporization and the consequent lowering of temperature
